Circuit Switching

Circuit Switching is a #Wide Area Network (WAN) technology that allows private connection from multiple sites to a single carrier’s switched network in order to communicate with each other. This can be done by using a physical switch#. It is originated from telephone network.

Though redundant circuits are possible with Circuit Switching, only one user could be in the circuit which the circuits are separated for each call, and only one path could be selected per call.

Packet Switching

Similar to 202207150846. Involves statistical Multiplexing# of packets. However, there is no strict rule on which path should the packet flow.
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)

ISDN is a set of technologies developed to carry voice, video and data across Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) by existing telephone lines. It utilises #Circuit Switching and primarily operates at Physical Layer#, Data Link Layer# and Network Layer#. ISDN offers bandwidth from 128kbps up to 384kbps. It was the first #broadband service deployed in the home but nowadays, it has been outshone by Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and Cable Modem.
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)

ATM is a Wide Area Network (WAN) technology that support both #Packet Switching and #Circuit Switching functionalities. It operates at #Data Link Layer. The basic components in an ATM network are ATM switches#, which is responsible for moving cells through the network, and ATM endpoints, such as workstations, Router, data service units (DSU) etc.
