Management Agent is a Network Device# equipped with agent software from #Network Management System (NMS) which allow remote management from the Management Station or Manager. In addition of requiring to respond to requests for information and/or action, it asynchronously and voluntarily sends the manager its information.

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
SNMP is a lightweight #Application Layer Protocol# allowing remote and local #management# of items or Network Device on the network. It is part of #Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP). SNMP comprises of two entities: agents who are running on managed node and collecting information about the node, and managers who are running on management workstation that requests information about devices on the network.

SNMPv2 1993
SNMP supports both central and distributed management (multiple Management Station or Manager with a pool of Management Agent) as each device in the network maintains local Management Information Base (MIB). The communication is usually done in User Datagram Protocol (UDP)# but SNMPv2 allows the use of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)# too.

SNMPv1 1988
#SNMPv1 is defined by RFC 1065 - 1067 which specify as a protocol supporting stand-alone Management Station or Manager and Management Agent. Limited but easily implemented Management Information Base (MIB) of scalar variables and two dimensional tables are defined. It is designed to be a streamlined (simple but efficient) protocol with limited functionality such as allows only centralised network management. The connection between the manager and agent is done using User Datagram Protocol (UDP)#.

Network Management System (NMS)
NMS is a set of #hardware and/or #software tools that allows administration of individual components of a network within a larger Network Management# framework. It consists of Management Station or Manager#, Management Agent#, Management Information Base (MIB)#, and Network Management Protocol#. These components assist in Network Device# discovery, network device monitoring, network performance analysis, and intelligent notifications.

Management Station or Manager
Management Station is a stand-alone system or part of the #shared system providing interface for human network manager which includes set of Network Management# applications such as data analysis and fault recovery. It is an interface to monitor and control network. It is responsible for translating manager’s requirements into monitoring and control of remote elements and extracting network management information from Management Agent.

Management Information Base (MIB)
MBI is a representation of network resources as objects being managed. It is a collection point of access points at Management Agent for Management Station or Manager.
